This Annex to the Java SE 17 Specification contains the Java SE 17 Editions of The Java Language Specification (JLS) and The Java Virtual Machine Specification (JVMS).

 

The Java SE 17 Editions include corrections and clarifications made to the JLS and JVMS since the Java SE 16 Editions, that is, since the Final Release of JSR 391. These changes are flagged with vertical bars and colorful text, as follows:

• Blue text indicates a modification of material in the Java SE 16 Edition.
• Red text indicates new material in the Java SE 17 Edition.

 

The Java SE 17 Platform includes one final and permanent feature that was a preview feature in Java SE 16:

• JEP 409 Sealed Classes
  Changes to the JLS / Compatibility & Specification Review
  Changes to the JVMS / Compatibility & Specification Review

 

The Java SE 17 Platform includes one final and permanent feature that was not a preview feature in Java SE 16:

• JEP 306 Restore Always-Strict Floating-Point Semantics
  Changes to the JLS / Compatibility & Specification Review
  Changes to the JVMS / Compatibility & Specification Review

 

In the Java SE 17 Editions of the JLS and JVMS, these changes are flagged with vertical bars and colorful text, as follows:

• Purple text indicates changes for JEP 409.
• Green text indicates changes for JEP 306.

 

The Java SE 17 Platform includes one preview feature whose specification is logically part of the Java SE 17 Editions of the JLS and JVMS, but is physically distributed in a standalone document:
